Mia team attends world leading education and technology ASU + GSV Summit

Last week over 10K people joined in person and online the annual ASU+GSV Summit with the theme ”Brave New World”. With a collaboration between Arizona State University and Global Silicon Valley, the education-technology summit brought together a world-leading group of educators, investors, policymakers, and companies to discuss topics on AI in education, skills-based learning, and new opportunities in the learn-and-work ecosystem. A lineup of speakers ranged from Bill Gates to Sam Altman and Khan Academy’s Sal Khan.

Sal Khan (Founder and CEO, Khan Academy), Julie Young (Vice President, ASU, Managing Director, ASU Prep Academy), and Jean-Claude Brizard (President and CEO, Digital Promise Global) discuss innovation and the AI frontier at the 2023 ASU+GSV Summit.

"The world of tech-supported learning, emerging technologies and new school models are addressing learning losses, increasing access, agency, and engagement, and quickly reinventing our fundamental concepts and mental models of school, teaching and learning. Ed-tech pioneers Sal Khan and Julie Young will share from decades of leading tech-supported, personalized learning programs that stem from the belief that with the right support all students can learn." Bill Gates (Co-chair and Truste of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) and Jessie Woolley-Wilson (President and CEO of DreamBox Learning) speak in a fireside chat on Stage X at the 2023 ASU+GSV Summit.

Key insights from this year's ASU-GSV discussions included:

✨ Companies recognize the urgency to invest significantly in upskilling and continuous learning, enabling employees to acquire the necessary skills for future job roles.

✨ Establishing various educational pathways leading to lucrative careers is essential.

✨ When making hiring decisions, skills, and capabilities should be valued as highly as traditional degrees.

✨ It's crucial to enhance accessibility to skills-based training programs for workers aiming for greater economic growth.

✨ By adopting alternative approaches to talent development and career progression, we can foster a more diverse and inclusive workforce, well-prepared for future job demands.

✨ We must prioritize upskilling women and ensuring their access to upcoming job opportunities.

Special thank you to the discussion “Women in Online Learning, a $14 billion opportunity”. This session focused on the benefits of online learning for women highlighting the importance of accessible online learning tools for women, women caregivers, and those without a degree to develop valuable skills. At the moment countless women learners are under-represented on these platforms, particularly in STEM fields and in emerging markets. This gap in participation could cost companies up to $14 billion in additional revenues by 2026; and could leave behind millions of people from participating in the digital economy.

About the Session: Women in online learning, a $14 billion opportunity

"A recent IFC study on women’s participation in online learning platform Coursera shows that online is a valuable and accessible tool for women, women caregivers, and those without a tertiary degree to develop valuable skills. It also presents a safe alternative for women, persons with disabilities, and those identifying as LGBTQ who have all said they're more likely to feel safer learning online. But women learners are under-represented on these platforms, particularly in STEM fields and in emerging markets. This gap in participation could cost companies up to $14 billion in additional revenues by 2026; and could leave behind millions of people from participating in the digital economy. Join us as we listen to experts in the digital education space and female leaders of EdTech companies to learn how they are working to broaden the access and outcomes of online education to reach this underrepresented user base and drive growth in the industry."

AI Personalized Learning

AI Personalized Learning took a central stage with several great sessions and panels. One of the great discussions was with Learneo (Course Hero) CEO & Cofounder Andrew Grauer, Quizlet CEO Lex Bayer, Edmentum President & CEO Jamie Candee, Cornerstone OnDemand CEO Himanshu Palsule, and GSV Ventures Investor Alexandra Argo on AI-personalized learning.  As Generative AI is taking over the world, Personalization is playing an ever more critical role in education. Whether in B2C or B2B, companies that successfully create an AI edge will deliver the highest value to learners and achieve the best retention with the highest LTV over time. Hear from leaders who are supercharging learning and productivity through the use of AI.
